How we review

SleepVerdict is a one-reviewer publication. We do not pretend to have spent six months sleeping on every mattress on the market. Instead, every guide is built the same way, in this order, and we tell you exactly which claims are researched and which are tested.

1. We aggregate credible reviews

We read what named publications (Which?, Sleep Foundation, Good Housekeeping, The Guardian Filter, Wirecutter and similar) and real users (Reddit communities like r/Mattress and r/Sleep, Trustpilot, Google Reviews) have actually reported in roughly the last six months, and we cite them by name. If we write “Which? rated this a Best Buy” or “the Reddit consensus is X”, that is a real, attributed source — not invented experience.

2. We verify pricing ourselves

We check current pricing in GBP directly against each vendor's own pricing page, including trial periods, return windows, and any add-ons (frame, pillow, mattress protector). Every comparison table carries a “last verified” date that is separate from the article's publish date, so you can see how fresh the numbers are.

3. We do honest first-hand testing where we can

We can only sleep on so many mattresses at once. For products we've actually lived with — a mattress for 28+ nights, a sleep tracker for a full month, a pillow for a fortnight — the article gets a Tested badge and we describe specifically what we noticed (firmness, edge support, motion isolation, sleep-tracker accuracy versus a known reference). For products we've only researched, we say so plainly with a Researched badge and rely on named third-party sources.

4. We use research-led framing for supplements

On any supplement covered on the site — magnesium, ashwagandha, melatonin, CBD, dog calming chews, joint supplements, anything ingested — we frame claims as research-led only. That means we cite peer-reviewed studies, named clinicians, or veterinary literature rather than telling you “we took X and felt Y”.

Why: UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) rules treat first-person efficacy claims about supplements as medical claims, which need clinical evidence to support. “Research shows” framing keeps the same useful information in the article while staying inside the rules. We'd rather give you the citations and let you decide than risk misleading you.

5. We respect that sleep is YMYL

Sleep sits in what Google calls “Your Money or Your Life” territory — content that can materially affect a reader's wellbeing. We take that seriously. Coverage of clinical conditions (sleep apnea, insomnia, canine cognitive dysfunction, sleep disorders) is always paired with a clear “talk to your GP / vet” pointer, and we do not position any product on this site as a treatment for a medical condition.

6. We commit to a recommendation

Every guide ends with a clear pick. We will not write “it depends” as a verdict. If the answer is “it depends on your sleeping position”, we tell you the best mattress for side sleepers, the best for back sleepers, the best for hot sleepers, and so on. The decision lives with the reader; the recommendation is ours.
